Jogjakarta City is the provincial capital of The Province of Jogjakarta Special Administrative Region (SAR). Sultan Hamengkubuwono X is the automatic governor that heads the Province. During Indonesia’s independence from the Dutch colonial periods, The State of Jogjakarta agreed to join itself to the Republic of Indonesia and obtain Special Administrative Regional (SAR) status; it is because the people do not elect the governor of Jogjakarta.

Jogjakarta is a city of heritage, culture, and education. It is sited in the center of the Java Island between Mt. Merapi (North) and Parangtritis Beach (South). The civilization in this area is dated back to the 8 century.

The population of the Province of Jogjakarta in 2003 was approximately 3,000,000. The Province of Jogjakarta has a total area of 3,185.80 km². Jogjakarta has the second-smallest area of the provinces in Indonesia, after the Jakarta Capital Region. However it has, along with adjacent areas in Central Java, some of the highest population densities of Java.
